Gran passo is made up of two layers of music. One layer, played on the piano keyboard, uses repeating rhythmic patterns, which drive the piece forward. The other layer is played on the strings inside the piano itself, using different techniques – such as harmonics, pizzicato, playing with a bottleneck and muting the tone with the finger – to create a contrasting line of music. As the piece progresses, each layer begins to take on characteristics of the other.
