Charlotte Seither - Composer

In working on this piece (Chamber Symphony, translucent object), my initial thought was to create a closed form in an orchestral setting with one instrument to a part, but at the same time to suspend two basic principles of the chamber symphony: the contrast of opposing pairs of “themes”, and the development of a synthetic process. Instead, I was obsessed with the idea of “diaphony” – translucence – and wanted to impart coherence to a directional process while exploring the individual moment that sound must surmount in order to form a constructive part of the formal process. It was this “state” of the chamber symphony that interested me, not the genre per se. My concern was the amalgamation of form with the process of amalgamation itself and the resultant mutual illumination.
